Happy New Year, Cottonwood families! I hope you all had a peaceful and restful winter break, filled with moments of joy and relaxation. Now that we’re back, it’s time to embrace the new semester, and with it, a fresh start for our homeschooling journeys.

As we step into January and a new year, I want to encourage you not to get caught up in lofty resolutions or overwhelming goals. While it’s tempting to set big plans for the year ahead, homeschooling is all about balance and flexibility — there’s no need to try to do everything at once. Instead, think of January as an opportunity for small, meaningful shifts that can set the tone for the months to come.

If you’ve found yourself feeling a little out of sync after the break, don’t worry. It’s normal to need a bit of time to ease back into the groove. Start with the basics: organize your space, review your schedules, and focus on the learning you’ve been enjoying so far. Give yourself permission to make adjustments along the way. Homeschooling is a dynamic process, and flexibility is one of its greatest strengths.

Here are a few ideas to help you ease into the semester:

  1. Set Simple, Achievable Goals – Rather than grandiose resolutions, set small goals that feel both attainable and meaningful. Perhaps it’s reading more books together as a family or exploring a new area of interest. Choose goals that will bring joy and spark curiosity. Check out 10 New Year’s Resolutions Worksheet Ideas for inspiration! (These awesome lessons were created for middle school and high school students but are adaptable.)
  2. Embrace Winter Learning – January is a great time to tap into the wonders of winter! Explore topics related to the season — whether it’s studying the science behind snowflakes, diving into a unit on hibernation, or finding ways to get outside (even if it’s chilly). Here are some fun winter-themed learning ideas:
    • Science of Snowflakes: Learn how snowflakes form and create your own crystal patterns using this guide from The Homeschool Scientist.
    • Winter Nature Study: Explore hibernation and animal adaptations with this wildlife winter unit study.
    • Outdoor Learning: Try winter nature walks or nature journaling. Many local parks and trails offer beautiful winter landscapes, perfect for outdoor learning.
  3. Use Available Resources – The school offers a treasure trove of field trips, activities, and educational resources that can bring your lessons to life. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of these opportunities to supplement your curriculum and give your children a hands-on learning experience. Don’t forget to register for our February field trips this coming Thursday at 12:30 pm!
  4. Celebrate Small Wins – Every step forward counts! Take time to reflect on the progress your family has made so far, no matter how big or small. Celebrate those moments, as they’ll keep you motivated and inspired throughout the semester. Consider using a learning journal to track milestones and reflect on your family’s achievements.

As we enter this new chapter, remember that homeschooling is a journey filled with ups and downs, but the heart of it all is to nurture a love for learning. Let’s focus on making each day count, rather than chasing perfection. The beauty of homeschooling lies in the process and the flexibility it offers, so take it one day at a time.

May this year be filled with inspiration, growth, and the joy of discovery. We’re so grateful to be on this journey with each of you, and we look forward to another amazing semester together.

Kindly,

Kara Parkins
